EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern closed out its weekend hosting the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in style with a dramatic 3-2 win over No. 13 Boston College.
Trailing by a goal with under seven minutes to go, the Wildcats scored two goals in a span of 30 seconds to take control of the lead and secure their second win over a ranked opponent this season.
The 'Cats got the scoring started in the first quarter as redshirt first-year Bente Baekers found the net off an assist from Lily Katzman. The goal marked the fourth on the year from Baekers, the most on the Wildcats through five games this season.
Boston College responded with two goals, but the Wildcats battled back in the fourth quarter as first-year Peyton Halsey scored an unassisted goal with 6:56 remaining to even the score at 2-2. Halsey finished the weekend with two goals, marking the second-straight week in which an NU first-year has scored multiple goals.
The 'Cats weren't finished as they grabbed control of the lead just 29 seconds later thanks to an overhead deflection from Katzman after a Lakin Barry shot. This was the first goal of the season for the senior Katzman and the eighth of her career.
The Wildcats defense was up to the task in the final minute, holding off a late charge from the Eagles which included a defensive save from sophomore Maren Seidel with 10 seconds remaining. Junior goalkeeper Florien Marcussen finished with five saves and has now recorded at least five saves in four of the Wildcats' five matches this season.
Northwestern will be back in action at Lakeside Field at noon on Friday, September 13 as they welcome UMass Lowell.
