EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern Field Hockey continued its run of Big Ten Weekly honors this week, as junior goalkeeper Florien Marcussen took home Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, while redshirt first-year Bente Baekers won her third-consecutive Big Ten Freshman of the Week award.
Marcussen went 2-0 in the net this weekend as the Wildcats notched wins over No. 24 Michigan State and No. 9 Michigan. Against the Spartans on Friday, she allowed just one goal while recording a season-high seven saves, her most in a game since August 31, 2018 vs. Duke. On Sunday, she was lights out against the Wolverines, recording five saves to keep the game scoreless in 80 minutes of action. The Wildcats' prevailed, 5-4, in the shootout to secure Marcussen her Big Ten-leading fourth shutout of the season. The Dutch native from Soest, The Netherlands now ranks third in the conference with 47 saves on the season.
Baekers earned her third-straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors and fourth on the season after notching two goals against Michigan State on Friday. On Sunday, she converted on a successful shootout attempt en route to the Wildcats' victory. The Dutch native from Rijswijk, the Netherlands now has sole possession of most goals in the nation with 16 on the season. Her 16 goals this year are already the most by a Wildcat player since Isabel Flens notched 18 in 2016, and the most goals scored by an NU rookie since Chelsea Armstrong had 22 in 2009.
Northwestern has now captured eight Big Ten weekly awards this season, including Big Ten Freshman of the Week in each of the five weeks the award has been handed out.
The Wildcats are currently riding an eight-game winning streak and will be back in action at Lakeside Field this Thursday for another marquee matchup against No. 4 Maryland. The game will begin at 2:30 p.m. CT, with the action being televised live on BTN.
