EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern field hockey continued its run of Big Ten Weekly honors this week, with two players capturing awards after the Wildcats swept a pair of weekend matchups. Redshirt-junior Lakin Barry was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals, while redshirt first-year Bente Baekers was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time in three weeks after scoring a pair of goals against UMass Lowell on Friday and adding the eventual game-winning score on the road Sunday at No. 15 Wake Forest.
The two forwards combined for six of Northwestern's nine goals scored in the victories over the River Hawks and Demon Deacons. So far this season, 11 of 20 of the Wildcats' goals scored have been registered by Barry or Baekers. Additionally, Baekers currently leads the Big Ten with seven goals, which also ranks tied for second in the nation and leads all first-year players.
In just three weeks of play, the Wildcats have earned conference honors four times, including the Freshman of the Week winner each week as Peyton Halsey was awarded with the distinction on Sept. 9.
Riding a three-game winning streak, No. 13 Northwestern will host the Ball State Cardinals at 6 p.m. Monday night. The 'Cats then open up Big Ten play at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20 at Ohio State followed by another non-conference matchup at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Miami (Ohio).
