‘Cats explode for seven goals in rout over UMass Lowell

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 13 Northwestern scored seven second-half goals in a 7-2 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

Both teams entered halftime scoreless before the 'Cats turned the tides in the final 30 minutes, scoring five goals in the third quarter and two in the fourth frame.

Junior Lakin Barry and redshirt first-year Bente Baekers each accounted for two goals in the second half. Senior Kirsten Mansfield assisted on three of the goals, matching her career which she had set twice prior to this season.

Senior Saar de Breij broke the stalemate just two minutes into the third quarter, scoring her second goal of the season to put the Wildcats on top 1-0. Minutes later, Barry added an unassisted goal to extend the NU lead.

Barry wasn't finished as she scored on a penalty corner just over one minute later on an assist from Ana Medina Garcia and Mansfield. This marks the second-career multi-goal game for Barry, who also accomplished the feat last season vs. Ball State.

Sophomore Maren Seidel was the next Wildcat to score as she converted on a penalty corner with assists from Mansfield and Kayla Blas to put the Wildcats up, 4-1. Seidel now has three goals on the season, tied for second-most on the team.

Baekers provided the final goal of the third quarter with a crafty unassisted goal. She added her second goal of the game off a penalty corner one minute into the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 6-1. The forward from Rijswisjk, the Netherlands now has a team-leading six goals and 13 points on the season. She has now scored a goal in four of the Wildcats' six games this season, with today marking her second multi-goal performance.

In the final seconds of the game, Peyton Halsey scored a goal assisted by Kuese Wareham to put the final touches on a stellar second half performance.

Junior Florien Marcussen added four saves in the net today and allowed just one goal in over 55 minutes of action. As a team, the Wildcats outshot the River Hawks, 22-7.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action this Sunday as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for a showdown against No. 13 Wake Forest. The 'Cats will then head back home the following day for a night match against Ball State on Monday, September 16 at 6 p.m. CT.
