PALO ALTO, Calif. — No. 15 Northwestern opened the 2019 campaign with a thrilling 4-3 shootout victory at No. 21 Stanford Friday afternoon. The Wildcats pulled out a 3-2 edge in the shootout to claim the victory.
The Wildcats have now topped the Cardinal in the season opener twice in the previous three seasons. NU bested Stanford, 1-0, to open the 2017 campaign in Storrs, Connecticut.
Northwestern stuffed the stat sheet on Friday afternoon, dominating the Cardinal in shots, 23-14, and 9-4 in penalty corners. Eighteen of Northwestern's 23 shots were on target.
After missing last season with an injury, Bente Baekers burst onto the scene with a two-goal performance in today's opener. Maren Seidel netted the Wildcats' other goal in regulation, while Kayla Blas and Kirsten Mansfield each notched a pair of assists.
Florien Marcussen earned the nod in net for the Wildcats. She made seven saves in 80 minutes of game action.
Northwestern will take on No. 4 UConn Saturday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m. CT.
