Kirchheimer battles at ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open

EVANSTON, ILL. - Strong Kirchheimer (class of '17) stunned viewers at the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open over the weekend, winning his first round qualifying match and nearly pulling off an impressive upset in the second-round qualifier.

Kirchheimer began the tournament ranked 550th but was able to capture a three-set victory over #353 Kevin Kraweitz on Saturday, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The NU alum managed to fend off three break points and win five break points of his own on the way to the win.

Kirchheimer returned to action on Sunday in the second-round of qualifying to face off against #105 ranked Damir Dzumhur. He started the match quickly, with a strong first serve and grabbed the first set 6-4. However, Kirchheimer began to struggle with Dzumhur's tough service games and eventually fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. With the loss, the former Wildcat just missed out on qualifying for the tournament's round of 64.
