'Cats Kick Off Preseason with Crosstown Friendly on Saturday

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern opens its 2019 fall campaign with a pair of preseason friendlies on Saturday against DePaul and on Wednesday at Indiana.

The Wildcats welcome the Blue Devils to Martin Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Admission is free for the crosstown matchup, and fans can receive schedule posters for the upcoming season.

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, the 'Cats will close out their preseason in Bloomington with a 10 a.m. matchup against the Hoosiers.

The #B1GCats are coming off a 2018 season that saw head coach Michael Moynihan's side reach the NCAA Tournament while earning 10 victories for the fourth consecutive year. The recent success of the program propelled three Wildcats to be selected in the 2019 NWSL Draft, including Chicago natives Kayla Sharples and Hannah Davison joining the nearby Red Stars. In addition, Marisa Viggiano was selected as a fourth-round pick by the Orlando Pride.

Sophomore Mackenzie Wood highlights a talented crop of returning players, and she will resume her spot between the goalposts after a banner rookie campaign (8 shutouts, .854 save percentage) that landed her on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Junior Regan Steigleder will features in central midfield, while sophomores Kaylee Titus and Julietta Thron expect to return to the back line.

Moynihan also added nine first-years and a graduate transfer to bolster the squad in the offseason. Marianna Annest could be one of many newcomers to contribute right away after winning the Gatorady Player of the Year Award in Colorado after her senior season.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will officially begin its season on August 22 at 7 p.m. as they host the SMU Mustangs at Martin Stadium. Fans can order season tickets as well as individual game tickets here.
