EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern clinched their series against Nebraska today with a powerful 10-2 win against the Huskers at the Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
The victory extended the 'Cats' win-streak to four consecutive games and improves their season record to 21-22.
First year Mike Doherty earned the win after an impressive outing, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing just one run and two hits while striking out three. He improved to 3-1 on the season.
Leadoff hitter Jack Dunn keyed the offensive explosion with a 4-5 performance at the plate, batting in three runs and scoring one. Junior Alex Erro and sophomore Jack Kelly each had three hits and three RBI. Senior Ben Dickey also went 3-3 with a home run and a walk.
After a quick run from Nebraska in the top of the first inning, the 'Cats bided their time until finding their stride in the bottom of the third.
With no outs, sophomore Casey O'Laughlin singled up the middle, and sophomore Jack Kelly followed suit, reaching first on an error. Senior Jack Dunn loaded the bases with a bunt down the third base line. Junior Alex Erro finished it off with a drive down the left field line, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double.
The 'Cats brought in two more in the fourth inning to bring the score to 5-1, with RBIs from Kelly and J. Dunn.
In the top of the fifth, second baseman Shawn Goosenberg and shortstop Jack Dunn turned a double-play to nail the first two outs of the inning. As a first-year, Goosenberg now has 14 double-plays under his belt.
First-year pitcher Mike Doherty came up three crucial strikeouts at the end of each of the first three innings. He did not let up a single hit in his final four innings.
Junior Sam Lawrence took the mound for the 'Cats in the top of the sixth and continued the 'Cats' momentum by allowing only one hit and one run throughout his three innings of relief. Sophomore Anthony Alepra finished the game off with the final three outs.
After Nebraska brought in a runner in the top of the eighth, senior Ben Dickey hit his third career home-run to left field. The 'Cats kept pushing throughout the eighth and brought the score to 10-2. Throughout the game, seven 'Cats recorded hits and four had doubles.
