EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern fell to Minnesota, 6-5, in a back-and-forth battle on Saturday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
Shawn Goosenberg, Willie Bourbon and David Dunn all finished with two hits on the day. Seven #B1GCats batters recorded hits as a part of a balanced offensive effort.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead on a Ben Dickey single in the bottom of the second. After a fielding error advanced Dickey to third, Jack Kelly scored him with an RBI single of his own.
The Gophers tied things up in the top of the third, but the 'Cats responded to take the lead again in the bottom half. After a Jack Dunn single and a Goosenberg walk, Bourbon doubled down the right field line to score Dunn.
The back-and-forth action continued with a Jordan Kozicky two-run homer to put Minnesota up in the fourth. Immediately following his dinger, the game was delayed for three hours due to inclement weather.
When play resumed, Nick Paciorek relieved starter Jack Pagliarini and got out of the fourth unscathed. Minnesota got a run off him in both the fifth and sixth innings, but both times NU responded with a run in the bottom half.
In the fifth, Goosenberg scored on a wild pitch to narrow the margin to 5-4. A David Dunn single followed by a Michael Trautwein double brought the score to its final tally in the sixth.
From there on, both team's pitchers would dominate. Josh Levy threw three scoreless innings to keep the game within reach, but the 'Cats offense was unable to generate anything against the Gopher relievers.
The game marked the final one in a Wildcat jersey for Jack Dunn, Ben Dickey, Danny Katz, and Willie Bourbon.
