EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern will put its perfect Big Ten record to the test this weekend with a three-game series at Nebraska starting on Friday.
The #B1GCats have won four-straight games after a 5-1 win at home against Loyola on Wednesday and are now 26-7 on the season. After sweeps against Rutgers and Iowa, the 'Cats are 6-0 in conference play for the first time since 2015.
The Wildcats were led by a combined effort on the mound from junior Morgan Newport and sophomore Kenna Wilkey. Newport threw 3.0 innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run while Wilkey finished out the game with 4.0 scoreless innings and five strikeouts to earn the win.
First-year pitcher Danielle Williams won Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the conference on Monday for her strong performance at Iowa. She started on Friday and Sunday and threw two complete game shutouts and while striking out 24 batters over both outings.
Northwestern took two out of three in its last series against Nebraska last year in Evanston, taking games two and three 8-3, and 9-4, respectively.
Nebraska is just 13-19 on the season, but has won three out of its last four games including a series win over Illinois and a midweek victory over South Dakota State.
The Wildcat pitching staff has been dominant this season in the circle with 249 strikeouts, the third best mark in the conference. The staff has also thrown 11 shutouts, tied for the most with Michigan and Minnesota in the Big Ten.
The NU offense has been paced four batters hitting above .300 with at least 90 at-bats in Nikki Cuchran, Jordryn Rudd, Morgan Newport and Maeve Nelson. All four batters have on base percentages of over .400 while Nelson, Cuchran and Rudd all are slugging above .500 from behind the plate.
Head Coach Kate Drohan now owns 596 career wins and can become the second head coach in program history to reach the 600-win mark, joining Sharon Drysdale.
