EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern finished their weekend sweep of San José State on Sunday afternoon, downing the Spartans, 6-0, at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
The Wildcats shut out SJSU for the second time in the series. Northwestern extended its winning streak to four-straight games with the victory.
First-year Mike Doherty delivered a sterling, 5.0-shutout inning performance. The start was his second 5.0-scoreless performance of the week after performing the feat in NU's victory at Chicago State on Wednesday.
Doherty has not allowed a run in 12.0-consecutive innings, the longest streak for a Wildcat tosser this season.
The Wildcat bullpen was also supremely effective, including 2.0-scoreless innings by Ryan Bader.
Senior infielder Jack Dunn continued his torrid pace, going 2-for-3 with two walks. He extended his hitting streak to nine-straight games and has hit .438 (14-for-32) over the skein. Dunn came into the contest with the second-best batting average in the Big Ten.
Rookie Michael Trautwein set a career high with three hits and also scored a run in the victory. Senior Willie Bourbon hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot.
Northwestern scored a pair of runs in the second inning after the frame started with back-to-back hits by Mike Trautwein and Anthony Calarco.
Jack Anderson registered an RBI ground-out, driving home Trautwein. The next batter, Jack Dunn, hit a single through the right side, driving home Calarco and making the score 2-0.
NU scratched across two more in the fifth inning, thanks to a Shawn Goosenberg single and a Bourbon sacrifice fly.
Bourbon hit his two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to move the NU advantage to 6-0.
The Wildcats will host Chicago State on Tuesday, April 2, at 3 p.m. at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
