EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern picked up its first Big Ten win on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Purdue at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
Northwestern relied on junior starter Hank Christie, who tossed a season-high 7.1 scoreless innings. He fanned six and allowed only four hits. He has allowed one or fewer runs in three of his five starts this season.
Redshirt first-year David Dunn went 2-for-4, increasing his season batting average to .348. He came into the game with the sixth-best batting clip in the Big Ten.
All of the Wildcat scoring came in the first inning. The Wildcat offense started with a Jack Dunn walk and Dunn proceeded to steal second.
The clean-up batter, Shawn Goosenberg, drove Dunn in with an RBI double — his third double of the season. The next batter, David Dunn, hit an infield single and a throwing error brought Goosenberg home to make the score 2-0.
The game was started with 4.1-no hit frames by Christie, the longest no-hit bid to start a contest this season for Northwestern, surpassing Parker Hanks' 3.2-no hit innings against MacMurray on March 12.
Christie tossed 7.0-scoreless frames and was lifted after allowing a lead-off single in the eighth inning. Junior Nick Paciorek entered the game and induced a double play and struck a batter out to get the Wildcats out of the eighth inning. He allowed one run in the ninth before inducing a double play to earn his third save of the season.
Jack Dunn walked twice in the contest, tying his season high. His .456 on-base percentage entering the game was tops for the 'Cats.
Five of Northwestern's six hits came with two outs, while NU held Purdue hitless in seven at-bats with two outs.
