CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Northwestern blanked BYU, 1-0, to start the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a win on Friday behind a one-hit performance from first-year pitcher Danielle Williams.
Williams threw her fifth complete game of the season in as many starts, allowing just one hit while striking out nine. She collected her third shutout and moved to 7-0 after another dominant outing in the circle.
The Wildcats moved to 8-2 on the season and picked up their fourth shutout as a team this year.
Northwestern pushed its lone run across the plate in the first inning after sophomore Rachel Lewis reached first with a leadoff walk, and then stole second. Senior Morgan Nelson drove her in with an RBI single to make it 1-0.
Nelson, Jordyn Rudd and Maeve Nelson each tallied multi-hit days at the plate for the Wildcats. Lily Novak had the other hit for NU in the game with a leadoff double off the wall to start the sixth inning.
Williams only allowed one baserunner the entire outing, which came in the fourth inning, and it was the closest the Cougars ever came to scoring.
The #B1GCats continue play this evening at 8:30 p.m. CT when they face Duke. The game will be streamed live on FloSoftball ($) and @NUSBCats will have live updates on Twitter.
