EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern women's fencing team wrapped up a successful first day of the Northwestern Duals by defeating 3 of 5 opponents.
"I'm really proud of the way our team fenced today. We faced some tough competition and fought hard," said head coach Zach Moss. "We had two very close losses that could have gone either way to go with some strong wins. Our team continues to show its strength and we're excited to put ourselves to the test again tomorrow."
Northwestern started the meet with a convincing win over No. 9 Penn, 18-9. The Wildcats previously defeated the Quakers, 14-13, at the Elite Invitational in November.
In the battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country, Notre Dame bested Northwestern, 15-12. NU's epée tandem of Pauline Hamilton, Maggie Snider, and Julia Falinska went 7-2, but it was not enough to top the Irish.
Prior to the match against No. 10 Temple, Northwestern honored its senior class: Yvonne Chart, Sharon Chen, Maddy Curzon, Ella Lombard, and Emine Yücel. The group fared well, as the epée and foil teams went a combined 11-7, but Temple escaped with the narrow victory, 14-13.
The #B1GCats went on to defeat Wayne State, 23-4, before wrapping up with a 27-0 sweep of Lawrence.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will compete in day two of the Northwestern Duals on Sunday, February 3rd. The Wildcats are slated to host No. 5 Ohio State, No. 6 Princeton, No. 8 Duke, Caltech, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Cleveland State.
