Rio Mar, P.R. — Junior Brooke Riley and senior Janet Mao are in the top-30 after the opening round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic held at the River Course of the Rio Mar Country Club Sunday morning.
Riley posted a team-best 14 pars, three birdies and a bogey to shoot a 2-over, 74, and is tied for 29th. After making a bogey on No. 11, Riley finished her round strong with three-straight pars and a birdie on No. 15, her final hole of the day.
Mao is tied for 30th after shooting a 3-over, 75. The senior had 13 pars, four bogeys and a birdie and also finished her round on a positive note with a birdie on No. 13 and back-to-back pars.
The Wildcats are 11th as a team at 14-over after carding a 302 in the play-five score-four format. The seventh-ranked Arkansas program leads the 14-team field at 1-over.
Northwestern's lineup features a trio of first years this week in Kelly Su, Kelly Sim and Jane Lu. Sim shot a 1-under 35 on the back nine, but shot 5-over on the front to finish the first round tied for 38th at 4-over. Su was tied for second among all players with five birdies Sunday, but also had six bogeys and a pair of double bogeys to open the tournament with a 5-over, 77.
Senior MacKenzie Hawkes, competing as the Wildcats' individuals in just her second tournament of the season, shot a season-best 4-over, 76, and is tied for 38th. Hawkes had four-straight bogeys starting at No. 4, but holed a pair of important birdies over her final seven holes to close the round on a high note.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action in round two of the tournament Monday morning at 6 a.m. CT. The 'Cats will tee off in a shotgun start with Big Ten foe Indiana and Iowa State.
