EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern wrestling is set for a double-dual in San Luis Obispo, California, on Monday night. The Wildcats will battle Stanford at 7 p.m. CT before wrestling host Cal Poly at 9 p.m. CT.
This is the second-straight year that NU will take part in a double-dual hosted by Cal Poly. The 'Cats topped CSU Bakersfield, 27-13, before beating Cal Poly, 30-8, on December 15, 2017.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is led by a pair of redshirt sophomore matmen who are both ranked second in their weight class. Sebastian Rivera (125 lbs.) is 6-0 this season, including three bonus-point victories and two ranked wins. Ryan Deakin (157 lbs.) has thrived since moving up one weight class this offseason, owning an 8-0 record, including three ranked wins. He topped No. 3 Larry Early of Old Dominion on December 7.
Johnny Sebastian (174 lbs.) has been tabbed the 10th-best wrestler in his weight class with his unblemished mark.
Overall, NU has three grapplers ranked in the top-10 for the first time since February 2015, when Jason Tsirtsis (No. 3), Pierce Harger (No. 7), and Mike McMullan (No. 3) had the honor.
After the competition, NU will wrestle in their home tournament — the 56th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships — held on December 29-30 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
