FARGO, N.D. — No. 17 Northwestern fell in a hard-fought match, 26-17, to North Dakota State on Sunday afternoon in NU's season opener.
In his debut in the NU starting lineup, redshirt first-year Yahya Thomas (141 lbs.) recorded a speedy pin of NDSU's Gavin Sutton, a 1:16 win by fall that shrank the Bison lead to 9-6.
No. 6 Ryan Deakin (157 lbs.) logged a major decision in his 2018-19 debut, a 12-3 win over Nick Knutson. At 174 lbs., No. 14 Johnny Sebastian won via a 13-8 decision over Lorenzo de la Riva.
Heavyweight Conan Jennings put on a dominating performance in the dual finale, beating Brandon Metz in a 12-0 major decision.
Northwestern is next back in action on November 18 for the Wildcats' home opener in the new Welsh-Ryan Arena. NU will battle No. 11 Virginia Tech.
