EVASNTON, Ill. – No. 12 Northwestern slipped up to No. 25 Ohio State, 2-1, at Lakeside Field Friday afternoon.
Puck Pentenga scored her team-high ninth goal of the season for the Wildcats, with assists from Kirsten Mansfield and Christen Conley. Her tenth goal temporarily moves her to second on the Big Ten leaderboard.
Junior Annie Kalfas started in goal and was credited with one save in 65 minutes of action.
The #B1GCats dropped to 8-6 on the season and 3-2 in conference, while the Buckeyes climbed above .500 to 7-6 with a 3-3 mark in the Big Ten.
The game started off with both defenses limiting opportunities, but Northwestern still found the first chance. Sophomore Mackenzie Keegan received the ball near the goal but her shot clanked off the post in a goalmouth scramble.
After a cautious first half, both teams came roaring out of the break, with the Buckeyes taking a lead eight minutes in on a tap in at the far corner of the net.
The 'Cats responded two minutes later on a perfect penalty corner routine. Mansfield served to Conley, and senior Charlotte Vazriri feigned a shot over the ball. Instead, it kept rolling to Pentenga, and she blasted the ball into the back of the net to tie it at 2-1.
Despite a flurry of three more corners in the next ten minutes, the Wildcats could not capitalize. On their third penalty corner of the game, the Buckeyes took the lead with just over 11 minutes to play.
Northwestern's offense could not find a way back, even with the keeper coming out for a player advantage with 4:30 to go.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is not back in action until next weekend, when they host a pair of ranked opponents, No. 15 Rutgers and No .7 Penn State on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
