EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 17 Northwestern cruised to a 6-1 win over Ball State on Senior Day at Lakeside Field on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Puck Pentenga and sophomore Lakin Barry had two goals apiece while senior Eva van Agt and sophomore Mackenzie Keegan each had one.
Pentenga chipped in two more assists, while junior Kirsten Mansfield had three and sophomore Christen Conley had two. Junior Saar de Breij also chipped in an assist.
Senior Annie Kalfas started in net and made one save while allowing just one goal.
Before the game, the team honored its senior class of Lucy Waterhouse, Annie Kalfas, Charlotte Vaziri, Eva van Agt and Puck Pentenga.
Pentenga improved her season point total to 34, good for the third-highest total in the conference. Her 96 career points are the 11th most all-time in program history.
With her three assists, Mansfield tied for the most assists this season in the conference with Daphne Groothuis of Rutgers.
Northwestern started the game with its offense firing on all cylinders. De Breij fed Barry into the circle, and the sophomore finished through the Cardinals' keeper's legs to make it 1-0. Van Agt doubled the lead in the 11th minute with a deflection on Pentenga's corner shot.
Ball State scraped one goal by in the 12th minute, but it would be the only success they would find on offense all day. The 'Cats padded their lead back to two in the 30th minute, when Mansfield picked up a rebound from van Agt and slid it across the goalmouth to Barry, who converted at close range.
The Wildcats managed the second half smoothly, adding a fourth on a patented corner play for Pentenga in the 43rd minute. Ball State pulled its keeper with eight minutes to play, and Keegan and Pentenga both capitalized on the empty net in the game's waning moments.
Northwestern improved to 9-9 on the season, and awaits a matchup with Michigan in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament next weekend on the road. The semifinals and championship match of the tournament will be held in Evanston from Nov. 2-4.
