Late Goal Steals Game from 'Cats at No. 2 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 17 Northwestern turned in one of its best performances of the season against No. 2 Maryland, but was undone by a late goal in a 2-1 loss on the road Friday.

The Wildcats outshot the Terrapins 15-12 and put 10 shots on goal compared to seven for the hosts. The 'Cats had six corners compared to three for Maryland, but after a second minute goal from sophomore Lakin Barry, they could not find the back of the net again.

Barry scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from first year Maren Seidel. The play was set up by a darting run into the circle from senior Eva van Agt

Redshirt Junior Annie Kalfas started in goal for the Wildcats and made five saves. Senior Puck Pentenga led the offense with four shots, three coming on goal, while junior Saar de Breij and senior Charlotte Vaziri each had three shots.

Maryland scored their goals in the 19th and 67th minutes, with the latter coming on a loose ball in the penalty circle to undo an excellent defensive stretch by the Wildcats.

After the Terps scored the go-ahead goal, the 'Cats had two late penalty corners including an untimed one to try to tie the game. Pentenga ripped a shot wide on the first, and NU was frustrated three times on the second: Pentenga forced the Maryland keeper into her ninth save of the game on the initial shot, and de Breij had her two shots on rebounds blocked.

Northwestern moved to 8-9 on the season and finished conference play 3-5. The Wildcats have one more regular season game remaining before the Big Ten Tournament, as they host Senior Day on Sunday at Lakeside Field. The game is set to start at noon, but fans are encouraged to arrive by at least 11:30 a.m. for Senior Day ceremonies.
