Wildcats Topped by No. 3 Nebraska in Home Opener

EVANSTON, Ill. — In the Wildcats' home opener, Northwestern volleyball (10-5, 0-3 Big Ten) was downed by No. 3 Nebraska (12-1, 3-0 Big Ten) on Friday evening at historic Beardsley Gym.
 
The 'Cats put a charge into the reigning national champions, holding a late lead in the third set, before ultimately falling, 25-23.
 
NU is back in action on Sunday against Iowa. The 'Cats battle the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m. at historic Beardsley Gym.
 
No. 3 NEBRASKA 3, NORTHWESTERN 0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-23)
 
TEAM NOTES:
  • As a team, Northwestern compiled 40 digs, 29 kills, a .143 attack percentage, and seven blocks.
 
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
  • Ella Grbac paced the 'Cats with eight kills … She also contributed two blocks and three digs.
  • Abryanna Cannon added six kills and a team-high nine digs.
  • Britt Bommer led Northwestern with 24 assists … She also tied her season high with two kills while also registering an ace, a block, and seven digs.    
  • Olivia Viscuso chipped in five kills for the second consecutive game.
  • Alana Walker contributed six kills and a team-high four blocks.
 
MATCH NOTES:
  • S1 | A back-and-forth set had Northwestern pull within one, 14-13, before the Huskers took the set 25-19.
  • S2 | Nebraska closed the second set on a 10-0 run to win, 25-12.
  • S3 | Northwestern held a late lead before ultimately falling, 25-23.
