Seidel and Kalfas Sweep Weekly Big Ten Honors

EVANSTON, Ill. – First Year Maren Seidel and Junior Annie Kalfas swept the Big Ten weekly honors, as announced by the conference Monday.

Seidel earned the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards. She scored the game-winning goal against No. 13 Iowa in a 2-0 win on Friday, and then scored both goals in a 2-0 win over No. 25 Cal on Sunday. Seidel became the first player this season to win two awards in the same week in the Big Ten.

Kalfas secured the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award for posting two shutouts against two ranked opponents at Lakeside Field. She made two saves against the Hawkeyes and four against the Golden Bears. Her fourth and fifth career shutouts lowered her goals-against-average this season to 1.45.

Northwestern is the first team this season to sweep all three player of the week awards, with the last occurrence coming on Oct. 9, 2017, when Michigan did so.

The last Wildcat to win Offensive Player of the Week was current senior Puck Pentenga, who did so for the week of Oct. 16, 2017. Kalfas is the first Wildcat to win Defensive Player of the Week since Maddy Carpenter in 2014.

Seidel joins Saar de Breij as the only other active Wildcat with Freshman of the Week honors, with de Breij having done so in 2016. Pentenga, junior Kirsten Mansfield, and senior Eva van Agt are the other active teammates who have previously garnered Offensive Player of the Week recognition.

Northwestern returns to action this weekend with a Big Ten road trip to face Michigan on Friday and Michigan State on Sunday.
