COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 12 Northwestern took down another ranked opponent in double overtime Sunday, defeating No. 13 Boston College, 3-2, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in College, Park. Md.
Junior Kirsten Mansfield scored the winner on a nifty assist from senior Eva van Agt. The win moved the 'Cats to 2-2 on the season and gave them their second ranked win, with the first coming against No. 15 Stanford last week.
Senior Puck Pentenga scored the other two goals for the #B1GCats. Mansfield recorded an assist on both of her goals, and van Agt and sophomore Christen Conley each picked up an assist as well.
Junior Annie Kalfas started in net and made nine saves over 82 minutes to pick up the win, her second of the season. Kalfas is up to 27 saves so far in 2018 in two and a half games of action.
Northwestern improved to 12-2 all time against Boston College and 3-1 against the Eagles at the Big Ten/ACC Cup.
Boston College jumped out to a lead 12 minutes in, with Frederique Haverhals converting off a penalty corner to make it 1-0.
Northwestern turned the momentum around in the last minute before the first half ended. The Eagles had a goal disallowed for shooting outside of the circle, and the 'Cats stormed the other way to win a penalty corner. Mansfield served the ball onto Conley's stick and Pentenga blasted her shot into the bottom corner to tie the game at 1-1.
The Wildcats carried their strong finish to the half into the second period, and seven minutes in earned another penalty corner. In a similar play to the first goal, Pentenga got a look at net and buried her chance past the Eagles' keeper to make it 2-1.
It looked like the Wildcats were well on their way to their second win of the season, but some late drama intervened. Boston College earned a penalty stroke just five seconds before the end of regulation and converted with a lofted shot to make it 2-2.
With three minutes left to go in the first overtime, the Wildcats found a crucial break when Boston College picked up a yellow card for a foul on Charlotte Vaziri. The NU corner towards the end of the half was thwarted, but the 'Cats had two more minutes of an advantage to start the second overtime.
On a penalty corner just over two minutes into the period, Pentenga's initial shot was blocked. The ball found its way to van Agt, who darted down the right side to the endline and crossed back to Mansfield, who was wide open at the back post. Mansfield made no mistake from a yard out and the 'Cats picked up their second win of the season.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action in just two days, as they travel to Kent State for a 2 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
