EVANSTON, Ill. – First year Mackenzie Wood was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week and Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Wood posted shutouts this weekend against Iowa State in a 1-0 win and against No. 25 West Virginia in a scoreless draw. Wood made 10 saves over 110 minutes against the Mountaineers and faced 32 shots total that game.
Wood was named Defensive MVP of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup and named to the All-Tournament Team as well. She and the Northwestern defense have also kept three straight clean sheets, dating back to the 2-0 win over Wake Forest in the opening weekend of the season.
The awards for Wood are the second and third this year already for the Wildcats, after senior center back Kayla Sharples won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against Miami of Ohio and Wake Forest.
Wood is the first Wildcat to win two honors in the same week since goalkeeper Jenna Hascher won Defensive Player of the Week and Co-Freshman of the Week on Sept, 16, 2013.
The last Wildcat to win Freshman of the Week is sophomore Kayleigh Stahlschmidt, who did so for the week of Oct. 24, 2017.
Chicago's Big Ten Team is back in action on Thursday when it travels to Missouri for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. The match will be streamed on SEC Network+.
