EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern senior Kayla Sharples was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to a 2-0 start to the season, it was announced on Tuesday.
Sharples, a Naperville, Illinois, native, keyed a defense that allowed only one goal over two matches. She also converted a goal of her own, a game-winner against Miami (Ohio) on August 17.
The goal was her seventh of her career and came in the 57th minute of the season's lidlifter. This is her first-career Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week nod.
Northwestern will next battle Iowa State and No. 25 West Virginia on August 24 and August 26, respectively, at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in West Lafayette, Indiana.
