EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern concluded its 2018 training trip over the weekend in New Jersey. The 'Cats played Saint Joseph's to a 2-2 draw (Aug. 14), before topping Rider, 3-1, on Aug. 17.
"It was a very good trip," said head coach Tim Lenahan. "I'd like to thank Stockton University for hosting our training sessions and our match versus Rider. It's a beautiful campus with fantastic facilities and my alma mater so it was a great thrill for me to be back."
Junior Mac Mazzola and sophomore Drew Viscomi each found the back of the net against Saint Joseph's, while Mattias Tomasino recorded a pair of goals and Bardia Kimiavi chipped in another to help NU beat Rider.
"I believe that we really grew during the week," Lenahan continued. "Our emphasis was on improving defensively and I think we accomplished that, while still scoring five goals. Saint Joseph's and Rider were good tests for our team. We will continue to improve as we get ready to open the season against a good Cleveland State team and a very highly regarded Xavier team this weekend."
Northwestern will welcome Cleveland State and Xavier to Evanston this weekend as part of the Lakeside Classic. The Wildcats and Vikings will square off on Friday at 7 p.m. CT, while NU's matchup against Xavier is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
