EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern senior quarterback Clayton Thorson has been named to yet another watch list entering the 2018 campaign.
The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc. announced the Watch List for the 2018 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award® Presented by A. O. Smith Tuesday morning. Named after one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, the prestigious award has been presented annually since 1987 to the nation's top college quarterback.
Thorson is among six student-athletes from the Big Ten Conference named to the initial watch list, including David Blough (Purdue), Alex Hornibrook (Wisconsin), Brian Lewerke (Michigan State), Trace McSorley (Penn State) and Shae Patterson (Michigan). In total, 49 quarterbacks in their fourth or fifth season were named to the list.
This is the second-straight season Thorson, who enters 2018 with 39 career starts, has been named to the watch list for the award.
Thorson enters his senior campaign as the program's all-time leader in wins with 27. A two-time All-Big Ten honoree, Thorson is the program's all-time leader with 44 touchdown passes and ranks second in completions (692) and passing yards (7,548) and is fourth in completion percentage (.600). The #HOMEGROWN product was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List in 2017 in addition to watch lists for the Manning and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards. His 39 consecutive start streak is tied for the longest in the nation with Washington's Jake Browning.
Chicago's Big Ten Team features the best home schedule in the nation in 2018 with Ryan Field playing host to Duke, Akron, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. Season ticket information is available at NUSports.com and by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
