EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern senior midfielder Marisa Viggiano has been named to the Mac Hermann Trophy Watch List, the United Soccer Coaches and Missouri Athletic Club announced Thursday.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
Viggiano's inclusion on the watch list comes off another strong year of production in the midfield, where she led the squad with eight assists, the fourth highest mark in the Big Ten, while also chipping in two goals. Viggiano was named to the First Team All-Big Ten in 2017 to go along with an All-Freshman Team appearance in 2015.
Viggiano ranks fifth all-time in Northwestern career assists with 15, and is five off of the second place mark of 20 heading into her final season.
Viggiano has started all 68 games possible in her Wildcat career and has been an integral part of a squad that has made three straight trips to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats won a Big Ten Regular season championship in her sophomore season while finishing second in the conference and advancing to the final of the Big Ten Tournament last year.
The senior midfielder joins recent graduate Lauren Clem as the only Wildcats to earn spots on the watch list since at least 2000.
Viggiano is one of 45 student-athletes included on the Women's Watch List, which is compiled by members of the United Soccer Coaches All-America Committees. Fifteen semifinalists will be named near the end of the season based on voting by NCAA Division I coaches. Three finalists will ultimately be placed on the ballot for the award with the winner announced Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
