EVANSTON, Ill. — The 10th Annual Kicking+Screening Film Festival will take place in New York City this week (May 22-25) and will feature soccer-inspired work to an audience that both appreciates and understands the power and beauty of the game, including the premiere of "Messi and ME."
In 2013, Matt Eliason earned international fame when he scored a bicycle kick in Messi and Friends vs. the Rest of the World friendly at Soldier Field. Eliason, Northwestern's all-time leading goal-scorer, had given up on his dream of playing professional soccer after not being selected in the MLS Draft and went to work as a financial analyst. The bicycle-kick goal went viral and restored his passion for the game of soccer and inspired him to take another shot at professional soccer career.
Messi and ME documents Eliason's journey from viral sensation to an Icelandic professional soccer player.
Northwestern head coach Tim Lenahan served as an executive producer for the piece.
