MINNEAPOLIS --- Northwestern and Michigan have a long, storied history of battles in the Big Ten tournament and Sunday's finale was no different with the second-seeded Wolverines edging the top-seeded Wildcats, 4-3.
As it has all year, a strong doubles performance got the Wildcats off to a great start and the early lead.
At No. 3, the pairing of Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi took down Lera Patiuk and Chiara Lommer, 6-3, before the fourth-ranked duo of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp defeated Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey by the same score at No. 1.
Michigan was able to set itself up for a comeback with a solid start in singles as the Wolverines took the first set in four of the six matches. The match was evened at 1-1 when Minor was able to post a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3.
A win by the Wolverines at No. 4 made it 2-1 in their favor. Alex Chatt tied it again moments later as she was able to close out Mira Ruder-Hook following a tough second set at No. 5, 6-3, 7-5.
All three remaining matches went to a third set. In the contest at No. 6, Doshi dominated the decisive set, rolling to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 triumph over Bella Lorenzini.
However, the Wolverines were able to pull out a pair of tight decisions at Nos. 1 and 2 where Kate Fahey and Chiara Lommer both notched 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 wins.
Northwestern (21-5) will learn its opponent for the NCAA tournament Tuesday when the field and pairings are announced at 4 p.m. on NCAA.com.
