EVANSTON, Ill. — Rookie Left-handed pitcher Quinn Lavelle is the Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Week after a career-best performance in Northwestern's 4-0 win at Maryland on March 30, the league announced Monday.
Lavelle (3-2, 2.10 ERA) threw a complete-game shutout on Friday and struck out a career-high eight batters. The Cleveland, Ohio, native was lights out against the Terrapins, facing the minimum through six innings and not allowing a runner to get in scoring position all game. He only surrendered four hits, one base on balls and one hit batter in the 30 batters he faced.
It was only the third time since the beginning of the 2016 season that Maryland has been held scoreless on its home turf.
Lavelle lowered his season ERA to 2.10, which ranks fourth among all Big Ten pitchers. He has thrown a team-best 34.1 innings this season and has only allowed eight extra-base hits. The southpaw owns 23 strikeouts and opposing batters are hitting just .221 against him.
This is the first time a Northwestern pitcher has earned the honor since Brandon Magallones on May 18, 2015, and first time a Wildcat rookie earned the distinction since Magallones in 2012.
Northwestern will have four games at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park this week. The Wildcats host UIC on Tuesday, April 3, before welcoming Michigan for a three-game set on April 6-8.
