EVANSTON, Ill. – Fourteen 'Cats scored as Northwestern rolled past Marquette Saturday afternoon at Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, 20-9.
First-year midfielder Taylor Pinzone led the Wildcats with her first career hat trick, while senior Shelby Fredericks tallied two goals and four assists.
The ninth-ranked Wildcats (5-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Golden Eagles (4-4) added back-to-back goals to tie the game. Northwestern responded by scoring seven in a row, including two straight goals by junior Claire Quinn, to increase the lead to 9-2.
The Golden Eagles responded with another run, this time putting in three straight to cut the lead to 9-5. Junior Emily Stein put a stop to it, however, bouncing a free position attempt in the back of the net. Pinzone capped a 4-1 run by the 'Cats to end the half when she increased the lead to 13-6.
Northwestern forced a running clock early in the second half after jumping out to a 16-6 lead when sophomore Meghan Duffy recording her first goal of the season. First-year midfielder Kate Paliotta joined in on the fun, scoring her first career goal to increase the 'Cats' lead to 18-8.
Northwestern controlled possession thanks to a 21-9 advantage in the draw circle, led by Fredericks who had 12 draw controls.
Chicago's Big Ten Team also turned up the defense in the second half, allowing Marquette to find the back of the net only three times. The Wildcats also forced the Golden Eagles into 18 turnovers on the game. Senior Lindsay Darrell and first-year midfielder Jill Girardi led the team with three caused turnovers each.
The 'Cats also led the way in ground balls, recording 26 to Marquette's 19. First year Megan Gordon and Pinzone had a team-high three, and four others had two.
