EVANSTON, Ill. – First-year second baseman Rachel Lewis has been named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week following her performance at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, last weekend.
Lewis delivered the big blow in Northwestern's 4-0 win over No. 11 Alabama Sunday, crushing a three-run home run in the third inning against the Crimson Tide. The blast was one of three extra-base hits for Lewis during a weekend in which she slugged .750 and reached base at a .500 clip to help the Wildcats to a 3-2 record.
In addition to her performance against Alabama, Lewis doubled twice and drove in three runs during a pair of victories against Portland State. She also had a base knock against top-ranked Washington and reached base twice without recording an at-bat versus BYU.
For the season, Lewis leads Northwestern with 16 RBIs and eight extra-base hits while ranking second on the team with 10 stolen bases just four weeks into her collegiate career.
Northwestern returns to the diamond this weekend, March 9-11, at the Houston Hilton Plaza Classic in Houston, Texas.
