LA QUINTA, Calif. — Senior Sam Triplett utilized a 4-under back nine in the first round of the Prestige at PGA WEST on Tuesday to thrust himself into first place in the tournament.

Triplett, who carded a 4-under 67 overall, leads second place Franklin Huang (Stanford) and Norman Xiong (Oregon) by one stroke. It was Triplett's second-best round of his NU career, trailing his middle-round performance of 64 at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in 2015.
As a team, Northwestern is tied for fourth place with Stanford in the now-abbreviated, 36-hole tournament. Day one was scrapped due to high wind.
The Wildcats trail the leaders, No. 2 Oklahoma State and Oregon, by only three strokes with 18 holes left to play. Chicago's Big Ten Team paced day one with 16 birdies.
Dylan Wu and Ryan Lumsden are both tied for 17th after day one of competition at one stroke over par. Wu utilized four birdies in the back nine, while Lumsden netted a pair of birdies in the same nine holes.
After a handful of bogeys in the front nine, Everton Hawkins went 2-under in the back nine to finish at 4-over. He is tied for 43rd.
Eric McIntosh is tied for 73rd after going 8-over.
The final round will begin tomorrow, February 21st, with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m.
