Wildcats Drop Doubleheader to Omaha

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Northwestern dropped its season opening doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at Camelback Ranch, the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox.
 
Due to flight cancellations on Thursday, the four game series was shortened to three, with the Wildcats flying in from Chicago on the day of the double-header.
 
The Mavericks defeated the #B1GCats in the lidlifter, 14-8. Junior Jack Dunn had a strong start to his 2018 campaign with three hits, two runs, two RBI, and two steals. Tommy Bordignon threw 2.2 innings of relief and allowed no earned runs.
 
First year David Dunn opened his collegiate career with an impressive outing, going two for five with two runs and a triple. Ben Dickey also collected two hits in the afternoon contest from the leadoff role. Sophomore Alex Erro had one hit, a walk and three steals.
 
Despite leading 5-2 in the evening contest, Northwestern couldn't hold on and dropped a 10-5 decision to Omaha. Willie Bourbon smacked a two-run home run to deep left center to lead the 'Cats offensively, adding to his triple in the first game.
 
Erro tallied two RBI in the second game, and made two spectacular plays on the diamond including a behind-the-back flip to Jack Dunn to end an inning.
 
Junior pitcher Danny Katz attacked the Mavericks on the mound, throwing five innings and racking up three strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.
 
Chicago's Big Ten Team finishes the series tomorrow against Nebraska Omaha with first pitch set for 1 p.m. A live radio stream of the game can be found here.
