EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern redshirt senior Maddie Lipp is the Big Ten Women's Athlete of the Week as announced by the Conference office Tuesday. It is the fourth such honor of her career and her first since April 11, 2017.
Lipp was outstanding for the Wildcats last Friday and Saturday at ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Lexington, Kentucky.
In Friday's convincing 4-0 upset win over top-seeded and 21st-ranked Kentucky, Lipp earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles over Mami Adachi to help Northwestern advance to the championship match.
The following day, Lipp nearly helped lead the 'Cats to an upset over No. 16 UCLA. She paired up with Erin Larner at No. 1 doubles to help the nation's fourth-ranked duo top the seventh-ranked team of Jada Hart and Ena Shibahara, 7-5, as NU won the doubles point. In singles action, 92nd-ranked Lipp pulled off another ranked win as she took down No. 100 Terri Fleming, 6-3, 6-4.
The Lake Forest, Illinois, native is a perfect 3-0 in both singles and doubles on the young season. Northwestern (3-1) returns to action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it hosts Texas at Combe Tennis Center.
