EVANSTON, Ill. — #20 Northwestern (7-2, 2-2 Big Ten) will travel to Minneapolis and look to knock off #14 Minnesota (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon in a match set for 1 p.m. CT.
PRIOR RETURNS
NU nearly picked up its second-straight ranked win last Friday, falling to Nebraska via tiebreaker criteria. Five Wildcats won bouts against the Cornhuskers, including #10 Sebastian Rivera (125), who improved his record on the season to 19-1.
#5 Ryan Deakin (149) dominated his opponent en route to a team-high ninth major decision of the season. It was also his highest ranked win on the season, as Nebraska's Colton McCrystal was No. 10 in the country.
#18 Johnny Sebastian (174) has won four consecutive Big Ten bouts and remained undefeated in conference competition with a major decision victory against Beau Breske.
Zack Chakonis (197) defeated Eric Schultz with a late locked hands technical violation and Conan Jennings (285) won a tough heavyweight bout in the first tiebreaker period.
SUPER SEBASTIAN
Redshirt first-year Sebastian Rivera (125) has only lost one bout in his first 20 matchups as a Wildcat, dropping only a one-point decision to #2 Nick Suriano (Rutgers) at Midlands. He has posted the best record through the first 20 bouts of a season for NU since Jason Tsirtsis went 20-0 to start the 2014-15 campaign.
RANKING RUMBLINGS
The #B1GCats are nationally ranked in nearly every poll, led by W.I.N. Magazine, who puts NU tied for 13th in their Tournament Power Index. For the second-straight week, Northwestern is 20th in the NWCA/USA TODAY Coaches Poll.
