EVANSTON, Ill. – Coming off of a second-place finish at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, undefeated Northwestern is set to host Maryland in the home opener at historic Patten Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 2nd at 2 p.m.
Redshirt first-year Sebastian Rivera, ranked 12th in the country, paced the 'Cats with a first-place performance at the Keystone Classic, winning all four of his bouts in the competition. Rivera's record on the year sits at a perfect 6-0.
#7 Ryan Deakin and #18 Mitch Sliga each reached the final bout, but ultimately took home second-place finishes, falling to the nation's top-ranked wrestler in their respective weight classes.
The Keystone Classic also saw sophomore Shayne Oster pick up a major decision and a fall en route to a third-place finish. Graduate student Michael Sepke accumulated three wins on the day. In total, nine Wildcats placed in the event.
Northwestern owns an all-time 2-0 advantage over Maryland. NU beat the Terrapins, 23-16, on Feb. 10, 2017 in College Park. In the dual, Alec McKenna won via decision over now 14th-ranked Ryan Diehl at 141 lbs., one of two probable reprise bouts from last season's competition.
The Terrapins are coming off of a strong performance in the Mat Town Open, paced by a first-place finish by redshirt junior Alfred Bannister. The Terps also feature a pair of top-20 wrestlers in nation, Ryan Diehl (#14, 141 lbs.) and Youssif Hemida (#12, heavyweight).
