EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern earned an at-large berth to the 2017 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship Sunday evening and will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, Saturday for a round-of-16 matchup against Louisville. The contest is slated to get underway at 1 p.m. Central time.
The NCAA tournament bid is the 14th in school history for the Wildcats and the program's first since 2014.
The winner of Saturday's matchup between Northwestern and Louisville advances to Sunday's quarterfinal round where it will take on the winner of the contest between Michigan and Syracuse at 1 p.m. CT.
Northwestern has a 14-6 record and tied for second place in the Big Ten Conference during the regular season with a 6-2 mark. The Wildcats advanced to the semifinal round of the Big Ten tournament before falling to eventual champion Michigan.
The tournament berth is the second for NU under the direction of ninth-year head coach Tracey Fuchs.
Northwestern and Louisville are quite familiar with one another having squared off against one another four of the last five seasons, including Sept. 19 when the Wildcats posted a 2-0 victory in Evanston.
Louisville is 14-7 this season and advanced to the championship match of the ACC tournament where it dropped a 1-0 decision to North Carolina.
