ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Tenth-ranked Northwestern saw its 2017 field hockey season come to an end in the NCAA quarterfinal round, falling 3-0 to third-ranked Michigan Sunday afternoon at Ocker Field.

The Wildcats conclude their season with a 15-7 mark while Michigan improves to 21-2.

Northwestern was without its leading goal scorer in the contest as Pascale Massey was forced to sit out due to an injury suffered in Saturday's overtime win over Louisville.

In the third matchup between the teams this season, both teams placed with great pace out of the gates. NU was able to prevent any shots on Michigan's first two trips inside the circle. However, the Wolverines capitalized on their third trip in as Carly Bennett found Emma Way for a goal at the 8:10 mark, putting the hosts in front.

Michigan remained on the attack but the Wildcats were up to the task and limited the Wolverines scoring chances.

A Michigan green card with 6:12 left in the half put Northwestern a player up and the 'Cats nearly capitalized. Puck Pentenga was able to get into the circle and get off a shot on goal, but Sam Swenson made the initial save as well as a rebound opportunity by Lakin Barry.

Northwestern would take the one-goal deficit into halftime as Michigan held slim advantages of 3-2 in shots an 1-0 in penalty corners.

The Wolverines earns a corner just over a minute in that NU was able to turn away, but Michigan's lead grew to 2-0 four minutes into the period when Way redirected a shot in front off a pass from Kayla Reed.

A miscue in the back led to Way scoring her third goal of the day at 50:55 off a pass from Meg Dowthwaite, giving Michigan a 3-0 lead.

Northwestern put the pressure on down the stretch, including earning three consecutive corners at one point, but it never was able to cash in.

NU finished the match with advantages of 9-6 in shots and 5-2 in penalty corners.
