PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Both of Northwestern's doubles teams suffered heartbreaking defeats in the opening round of competition Wednesday at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
The team of Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp were tasked with facing the draw's third-seeded team of Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris from Duke. After dropping the first set, the Northwestern duo bounced back to win the second before falling in a third-set tiebreak 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Alex Chatt and Lee Or also came up just short against NC State's Anna Rogers and Claudia Kiltorin. The Wildcats came back from losing the first set to win the second before being narrowly edged in the third-set tiebreak 6-1, 5-7, 11-9.
Each of the two NU teams will be back in action Thursday as they start competition in the consolation draw.
