PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Northwestern's Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round with a victory in their first doubles match Thursday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships.
After receiving an opening-round bye, NU's fourth-seeded duo defeated Fernanda Contreras and Emily Smith of Vanderbilt, 8-4.
Chatt and Lipp next will take on Duke's Samantha Harris and Kelly Chen with a berth in Saturday's semifinal round on the line.
Northwestern's team of Erin Larner and Lee Or, who had advanced to the main draw through the qualifying stage, narrowly dropped their opening-round match in the main draw as they fell to Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin, 8-6. They'll take on Santa Clara's Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff in Friday's consolation draw.
