LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – Northwestern opened its 2017-18 season at the Remenyik Open on Saturday, highlighted by two semifinalists in the senior foil competition and a top-four sweep in junior epee.
In senior foil, sophomore Amy Jia and junior Sharon Chen tied for third place and advanced all the way to the semifinals. Sophomore Alexandra Banin added a top-eight finish by advancing to the quarterfinals.
First year Justine Banbury and junior Yvonne Chart advanced to the third round of direct elimination bouts. Banbury was defeated by eventual semifinalist Chen, and Chart was defeated by Wildcat alumna Stephanie Chan, who went on to win the entire event.
Jia, Chen, Banbury and Banin all went 5-1 in pools. First year Sofia Simontov also won her first career direct elimination bout in the first round.
In the junior epee competition, the four 'Cats competing earned a clean sweep of the top four spots in the competition. Sophomore Pauline Hamilton won her second straight junior epee title at the Remenyik open, defeating first year Anya Harkness in the final.
First year Marta Amador Molina and sophomore Shirley Luong tied for third after earning two direct elimination bout victories each.
The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow in three competitions, highlighted by the senior sabre and senior epee events.
