Northwestern fell behind early as the Orange scored a goal within the first minute of the contest when Syracuse's Adan Bakalovic found the back of the net just 54 seconds into the game.
The Orange kept the offensive pressure up and scored two more goals in the 12th and 19th minutes to take an early 3-0 lead.
Junior Jake Roberge scored his first goal of the season in the 64th minute when Camden Buescher served a ball into the box and Roberge put a header on a ball that went to the back or the net.
Elo Ozumba took a pair of shots in the contest, while Ty Seager also registered a chance.
Northwestern will return to action and open Big Ten play on Friday, Sept. 8, when Ohio State visits Martin Stadium.
