EVANSTON, Ill. – The Northwestern women's fencing team kicks off the 2017-18 season this weekend when it hosts the Remenyik Open in Libertyville, Illinois.
The Remenyik Open is a two-day USA Fencing Regional Open Circuit event open to all members of USA Fencing. The event will feature individual weapon competitions and the Wildcats will compete in the senior and junior age classifications.
"The team is excited and ready for this competition. It's a great opportunity to see where we are as a team," head coach Zach Moss said. "We have a lot of new faces this season and we have a very deep team, so this will be an excellent chance to see them all competing together."
The 'Cats will compete in junior sabre, senior foil and junior epee on Saturday. On Sunday, they will flip the events and compete in senior sabre, junior foil and senior epee. The first bouts on both days for Northwestern will start at 10:30 a.m.
Each event will feature a round of pools with six or seven fencers per group in a round robin, followed by the direct elimination round featuring longer bouts up to 15 touches.
In last year's Remenyik Open, Pauline Hamilton finished first in the junior epee competition and fifth in the senior epee in her first ever events as a Wildcats. Sharon Chen and Kaila Budofsky tied for third in the senior foil competition as well.
This will be the first event for Northwestern's Class of 2021. Of the ten first year fencers making their collegiate debuts, five will compete in sabre, three in foil and two in epee.
