WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Northwestern (10-3) dropped their first Big Ten competition on Wednesday, falling to No. 13 Purdue at Holloway Gymnasium.
In the match, senior outside hitter Symone Abbott continued her skyrocketing through the Northwestern annals, moving into sole possession of ninth place in career kills. She led all Wildcats with 11 kills.
The Wildcats were outhit in the first set by Purdue, .414 to .132. First year outside hitter Nia Robinson was given the most offensive chances, totaling 14 attacks, while senior outside hitter Symone Abbott posted three kills with no errors in the match. The #B1GCats were able to keep the set close in its entirety, but Purdue pulled away, 25-18.
Northwestern was able to hit much better in the second set, amassing a .304 clip thanks to only committing four errors. The Wildcats were not able to gain an edge over Purdue, however, and dropped their second-straight set, 25-20.
The third set was the closest of the competition, despite the final score. The Wildcats held a 14-12 advantage in the middle of the match, but let it ebb away as Purdue won, 25-18.
The Wildcats begin their home slate on Sept. 23, playing Illinois at 7 p.m. at historic Beardsley Gym in Evanston Township High School.
