EVANSTON, Ill. -- Eva van Agt's goal just beyond the midway point of the first overtime session made No. 14 Northwestern a winner in its Big Ten opener Friday afternoon as the Wildcats defeated Ohio State, 3-2, at Lakeside Field.

Lily Katzman scored a pair of goals for Northwestern which extended its winning streak to three and pushed its season mark to 5-3.

Northwestern finished with an 18-6 edge in penalty corners and a 22-15 edge in shots. Annie Kalfas made eight saves to earn the win in goal.

In an evenly played first half, the Wildcats tallied first at 9:46 when Katzman scored on a deflection off a penalty corner with Puck Pentenga getting credit for the assist. Ohio State leveled the score at 21:20 when Maddy Humphrey redirected a shot of her own off a penalty corner.

The teams went into halftime tied, 1-1, after NU posted a slim 9-8 edge in shots while having a 9-4 advantage in corners.

The Buckeyes struck first in the second half four minutes in when Humphrey teamed up with Maartje Bongers on a goal for the second time on a goal that mirrored their first. However, Northwestern dominated the action from that point forward.

The Wildcats tied things up again just four minutes after Ohio State had taken the lead. Katzman notched her second of the game and the season when she tapped in a cross from Pascale Massey.

NU racked up the penalty corners in the second half, earning nine more opportunities, but was never able to cash in and collect the go-ahead goal.

The teams eventually went to overtime where the Buckeyes put on the early pressure, forcing Kalfas to make three saves. Northwestern eventually turned the tables and its pressure paid off when Massey fed a cross to van Agt, who finished it past Liz Tamburro to give NU the sudden-victory win.

The Wildcats return to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday when they host Louisville.
