2017-18 SCHEDULE
EVANSTON, Ill. — Another rigorous set of Big Ten foes await Northwestern in their 2017-18 slate, it was announced Monday.
The 'Cats will host four of those in-conference rivals at their temporary home this season, historic Patten Gymnasium on Northwestern's Evanston campus. Welsh-Ryan Arena, the Wildcats' permanent home, is undergoing a complete, $110-million renovation and will be ready for the 2018-19 campaign.
NU will host its first competition on December 2 as the Wildcats take on the Terrapins of Maryland.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will see three other squads make their way to the North Shore, as Wisconsin (Jan. 12), Nebraska (Jan. 19), and Rutgers (Feb. 2) will grapple against the Wildcats in the third season under Head Coach Matt Storniolo.
The 2017-18 slate will also feature the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), held this year at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Northwestern will start the season on Nov. 5 on the road at the Michigan State Open and then will travel to Norfolk, Virginia, to compete against Old Dominion and Gardner Webb on Nov. 11. The 'Cats will wrap up their three-competition road swing at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 19.
After the home dual against Maryland, NU will travel out west to take on Northern Colorado on Dec. 10. That competition will be held in Broomfield, Colorado, the hometown of redshirt first year Ryan Deakin, who will join the Wildcats' lineup after an offseason in which he earned a silver medal at the World Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Before returning home for Midlands, the #B1GCats will wrestle against Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, on Dec. 15.
NU resumes their Big Ten slate after the new year, traveling downstate to compete against Illinois, Jan. 7. After a back-to-back in Evanston, the 'Cats travel to the Land of 10,000 Lakes for a dual against Minnesota (Jan. 28).
A home dual against Rutgers wraps up the Wildcats' home slate, and Northwestern finishes up the season with four competitions on the road.
The wrestling squad takes on Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 4 to start the road jaunt. A quick trip to neighboring Purdue (Feb. 9) is the next opponent.
Finally, the 'Cats wrap up their conference slate with a dual at Indiana on Feb. 11. NU finishes its regular season with a non-conference competition at SIUE (Feb. 18) in Edwardsville, Illinois.
The Big Ten Championships, held at East Lansing, Michigan, will be held from March 3-4. That is followed up by the NCAA Championships, held on the shores of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.
NU returns Conan Jennings and Johnny Sebastian, both of whom placed at Big Tens. Jennings, NU's heavyweight, also posted a pair of shutout victories against highly-ranked opponents at NCAAs. The Wildcats will also welcome Deakin and Sebastian Rivera, a pair of highly-touted redshirt first year wrestlers.
