LANCASTER, Pa. -- Annie Kalfas made a career-high 13 saves for No. 14 Northwestern, but No. 12 Boston College got the game-winning goal 35 seconds into the second overtime session to defeat the Wildcats, 3-2, as part of the B1G/ACC Cup at Spooky Nook Sports.
The first half was a defensive battle, but Wildcats (2-2) dented the scoreboard first at the 8:41 mark. Eva van Agt dribbled into the circle around a defender and beat Sarah Dwyer for her second goal of the season to put NU in front 1-0.
The Eagles managed to get the equalizer at 20:16 when Jaime Natale scored her third of the year off an assist from Brooke Matherson to level the score.
The teams would take the tie score into the half as they tallied just seven combined shots over the opening 35 minutes of play.
Northwestern fought off an early second surge by Boston College as Kalfas made three saves to keep the match tied.
The 'Cats eventually would claim their second lead of the match at 46:57. Lakin Barry scored her first collegiate goal when she deposited a feed from Saar de Breij to make it 2-1.
The Eagles kept the pressure on and eventually tied the match with just under 12 minutes remaining on a rebound goal by Alesandra Miller following an initial shot from just outside the circle.
Northwestern had a series of opportunities to take the lead as the clock ticked under five minutes remaining in regulation. The Wildcats earned four penalty corners, but were unable to cash in with the go-ahead goal.
Boston College had one last chance to win it in regulation as it earned a corner of its own with time expired, but Kalfas made her 10th save to force overtime.
