CHICAGO, Ill. — Northwestern topped DePaul in three sets in the final match of the Blue Demons' weekend invitational. The Wildcats' win marked their seventh in a row.
At the conclusion of the match, senior setter Taylor Tashima was named the MVP of the DePaul Invitational. The Wildcats were anointed the champions of the two-day tournament.
The Wildcats found themselves in a hole to begin the first set, but were able to rebound against the Blue Demons. A back-to-back dump by senior Gabrielle Hazen and a resounding kill by senior Symone Abbott tightened the DePaul gap to 14-12. Despite a Blue Demon timeout that attempted to deny NU's momentum, the 'Cats propelled forward, taking the first set, 25-20.
Chicago's Big Ten Team had a much-improved hitting performance in the second set, only committing two errors en route to a .379 hitting percentage. In comparison, DePaul hit only .091 as Northwestern pulled away with a resounding 25-14 victory.
NU was able to use the same combination of an efficient hitting performance and stifling defense in the third set, limiting DePaul to a match-low .083 hitting percentage in the third set. The 'Cats finished up their competition with the host Blue Demons with a 25-19 victory.
Northwestern is back in action next weekend at the VCU Invitational. The #B1GCats start play against Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. CT.
